I disagree about 'invalid', update-manager -c is an explicit step
performed by the user. We're not talking about automatically updating
to a short term release, but merely making it possible to do so.
Probably not so important with hardy right around the corner, but until
that time it'd be useful
Downgrading update-manager in synaptic via force version will allow you
to update-manager -c to upgrade to edgy.

6.06 is a so called long term release, that should be used in the
productive area. It would be fatal to over an upgrade to a short term
release.

I reported it in "Question #9122 in update-manager in ubuntu".

and left it running, thinking it would update my software
while I was away.

There is a server down time. That prevents update-manager from fetching
the required update (metarelease) information.
