Jeremy: see comment 73. OpenOffice.org, which is the main culprit here,
now has a toolbar button to make the document editable.
I've opened bug 605417 on the alternative fix. But I'm not totally sure
it's the right thing myself.

We have the same problem with informations like a memo or other stuff

This behavior I did not expect either: I opened an attachment from an
e-mail, renamed it (making sure not to overwrite the original), saved
it, but did not realize I saved it with the original file in tmp / as a

I agree with pvilela: this is not a bug, it is actually a feature!
If I open a spreadsheet and I want to tweak the formulas, I must first save it;
actually it is not as simple as pressing the save button, because I actually
have to "save as..." it, name it, then save it. All of that, even if I do
Well, to me the fix is a bug. I liked the way it worked. I used to edit the
ODF attachments and save them else when needed..
Now instead of edit-save I have to save-edit-save.
But worse than that, in 8.04 I get the following behaviour:
OpenOffice.org keeps opening the file, and opening, and
Sorry, don't see the bug linked above, it has nothing to do with this.

Why does every application use /tmp?
Laziness? Because it is always there?
Why does each application not have an option on where to set this application's

I'm afraid correcting the bug in thunderbird would not be enough.
Firefox and any web browser would have to be corrected too. And probably
some other internet software.
Is there any mean to correct this behavior on a higher level ?

Out of interest, why has this now been set to Needs Info? The various

Saving temporary files elsewhere just relocates the problem - users
still won't know where they've saved the file.
Preventing edited files in /tmp/being deleted is (afaik) impossible
because you can't easily distinguish them from regular temporary files

I think this should be considered a system wide bug. Lots of people open
a document from firefox, thunderbird or any other internet program that
saves temporally files to /tmp when opening them with another
application.
The typical case is opening an attached document from a webmail to
openoffice.
