I see same issue on Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 (daily build) on HP EliteBook
8540w.
On first attempt to switch system becomes unresponsive and display
garbled. After 15 seconds display is restored. Second attempt usually
works ok.
Here is my hardware info:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia C

Reproducible on a Dell Latitude E6510.
Hardware identifies as:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M] (rev a2)
Mostly, display is garbled, sometimes, the window decorator and unity
crash. In rare cases, the display works. If anyone is interested, I can

Thanks for the info. I switched to Unity/3D again and saw this
behaviour.
* First attempt at switching display - did NOT work. Screens went blank and
after the timeout of 15seconds, it came back to old state.
* I hit on 'Apply' again. On this attempt, the display switch WORKED.

thanks for the bug report. Is that still happening for you with latest
unity/compiz in Ubuntu 11.10? There was an update that fixed few of the
multimonitor failures so I was wondering if something changed for you as
well.
