Yes, I just switched my gtk theme to Clearlooks and Banshee is now
starting just fine.
Just for anyone else with this bug: the 'theme' being refereed to here
is not the KDE theme (or, for that matter, the gnome theme if you are
using Gnome/Unity), but the special theme that KDE uses to decorate gt
Sounds like it's an issue with gtk2-engines-oxygen, rather than any
individual application then. I'll reassign this bug to that package
instead.

Someone with this problem in #kubuntu tried switching theme from
oxygen-gtk to raleigh and it allows it to start. Gimp and Genie have
this problem on some systems also.

Some follow up.
First, I can work around this by launching banshee as root. This is less than
ideal, but it does work.
Secondly, this bug exists in both the unstable and daily builds in the
Banshee ppa's (ie, https://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/banshee-

Ok, I've taken a shot at a gdb run, pulling together some tips from
here: http://www.mono-project.com/Debugging
(gdb) mono
(gdb) handle SIGPWR ignore noprint pass
(gdb) handle SIGXCPU ignore noprint pass
(gdb) set logging on debug.txt
(gdb) break gdk_x_error
Function "gdk_x_error" not defined.

hmm, banshee was developed in mono, which I don't have any experience
with. 'banshee' is just a shell script that launches mono.
I've attached the output from running $ banshee --debug

procedure:
gdb banshee
(gdb) set logging on debug.txt
(gdb) break gdk_x_error
(gdb) run --sync
reproduce the crash and:
(gdb) thread apply all bt
