It really should be about the the resolution being too low...the 3d
acceleration isn't as important to me.

I had this problem after upgrading to Feisty. Setting the UseEDID
option (in the device section) to false fixed it.

I have tried to manually add the nvidia binary for the legacy hardware.
The current version at nvidia will not find a correspondent version for
my kernel, nor it can build on demand (failed dependency).

x86_64 install of Feisty Beta, updated up to 20070325. No matter what

see, you are using the binary driver with edgy, and free driver with
feisty.
You cannot install nvidia directly, it has to be done by hand after
installation, and the free driver doesn't have 3D-support at all.
Could you post the result of 'sudo xresprobe nv' and 'sudo ddcprobe'
from Feisty.
