Edgy is still supported and this bug was introduced in Edgy so there should be
a fix for Edgy too.
The bug has been fixed at the time of reporting so nothing new here.

Upgrading straight from the feisty repositories didn't work - apt-get
tried to update everything else and would crash. Instead, downloading
and installing using gdebi worked.

I have the same problem. I hope this get fixed soon. I will wait till
ubuntu package get fixed. I am afraid that by installing Debian
packages, I might break my system. I don't need more problems.

Thanks for the tip, Michael! It worked for me. I had to "sudo apt-get
upgrade" to finish the installation of some packages that were half-
installed because of the fontconfig problems.

I have had this bug also. Since this was very annoying that synaptic
compains about errors with every update/installation, I searched for a
solution and came to this bug report.
I could solve this by installing the debian unstable package as
mentioned above.
For anyone other who has this problem
so.can we expect a fix to this bug or not?
there's a fix for the debian package, apparently - and I've had this issue on
my (supposedly) stable install for over a month now.

The bug is in fontconfig. I fixed this by installing the latest
fontconfig from Debian unstable (2.4.2-1).

but i didn't find a way to install from festy package cus it has some
dependencies from libc6 (version from festy)
