I have redraw issues with Libreoffice too sometimes so this might not be
such a bad thing to enable system-wide for users with Nvidia graphics cards
who are experiencing problems. Apparently it boosts the performance of any
QT interfaces.
Thanks for your tips for changing the desktop file!

Excellent! Changing the QT graphicssystem session-wide might have
negative effects on other QT applications, such as Libreoffice. To just
have Anki in raster mode, it seems possible to invoke it from the
command line like this:
anki -graphicssystem raster
This can also go into the Exec line of th
This still doesn't explain why things worked in 10.10 and not in 11.04
though - there has clearly been a regression somewhere that needs
looking into and fixing as we can't expect users to apply such a
workaround manually.

If you include the text below somewhere in your .bashrc file (located in
~/.bashrc) then Anki should load automatically in Raster mode from then

yes, this seems to work. also, if you quit and restart anki, it still
works, so i imagine you only have to export the parameter once per
session. Thanks Jon and Daniel.
Does someone know if this means this report should be changed to list
some other package like xrender or pyqt?

Somebody just emailed me with the following workaround. I don't have
time to test right now but maybe people could try it out and report
back.

I had this same bug with gnome3 on fedora 15.
This is not a compiz bug but a XRender bug (I think, I have no idea to
be honest)

In unity, triggering the screen redraw by hitting the key (the
one with the windows symbol on it) works for me. If you don't just tap
the key, but hold it down for > 0.5 seconds, the black "dash" overlay
doesn't pop up. Easier than clicking around with the mouse. Still
annoying.

With some mouse acrobatics, Anki is at least usable with Unity: A screen
redraw is achieved when clicking on the middle of the top panel.
It is not fun though, because one has to do it after each click on "Show
Answer" or "Easy/Medium/Hard". I favor the Ubuntu Classic workaround.

As it happens, I have had the problem in Classic as well, but very
infrequntly. 1 out of every 100 repetitions or so. Mostly in the
beginnin of the session, then fine for the longest time. Definitely to
live with in my case for the moment. I didn't use Unity for more than a
few hours.
