Had a slightly different experience this morning after waking from
suspend. The retained image was pixelated. Wish I could've grabbed a
screenshot, but it looked similar to TV noise. Mousing over the Ubuntu
symbol caused the menu to come out again, which redrew the menu and it
retracted normally.
Saw problem again today. Opened music app. Could move it behind
sidebar which was inactive. I then 'clicked through' the sidebar and
closed the app. Opened the app again: same problem was there. Opened a
second app. (a terminal) and this app. move the terminal into autohide

I have found a work around that is quite simple to get you into a

3. Drag it onto the launcher and let it go

Just a note on this particular bug (that shouldn't influence the decision of
what's the best option by default):
- this issue is due to compiz being puzzled in the stack order (mainly, it
doesn't know that there is a window under the launcher). It's the same issue
which leaded to the "invisible

It's a tough call. There are bound to be cries of "give me my screen
real estate back!" if the launcher is always there. But leaving it
unresolved just makes Unity appear 'buggy' in this; its first public
appearance.

I've seen this too.
I think we need to drop the "non-autohide" mode entirely, and that will
make it easier to ensure the launcher can't think it should be
