Dang. The 2.6.38-9 definitely doesn't fix it for me. It's reproducible
in both Unity and the Ubuntu Classic Desktop. I'm going to try the
2.6.39-1.6 now.

After using the test kernel for a while, I can confirm that the issue
still occurs with this kernel, it just takes more uptime for it to
occur. I'm now trying the solution proposed in #55 (turning off 'Sync to

After installing kernel 2.6.39-1.6, I am no longer seeing this issue.
Additionally, I am unable to force-reproduce the bug with xset dpms

Am I correct to assume the kernel fix will be applied to the 2.6.38
branch as a SRU for natty-updates?

Re #55, the problem recurred, but with less frequency. htop shows that
from time to time, both processors on my system run at 100% or very

I've fixed the problem I had - at least I think so. After an extremely
frustrating day with an unusable machine (dual-processor, Acer desktop).
System / Preferences / CompizConfig Settings Manager / OpenGL
and then un-tick "Sync To VBlank".
My machine came back to life. What a relief.

I will look at the new kernel fix and verify with xset dpms. I did

I did some testing with the proposed-fix-kernel provided and there was
no freezing at all. I tried setting it manually via console and

I just discovered something. Last time the bug manifested itself, I

No, it doesn't. This bug has several assignees, is full of debugging
information, already triaged, targetted and milestoned, so it doesn't
really make sense to mark it as a duplicate of a bug that has none of
those things (that would just create extra work for people) ;)

Undoing the duplicate. If you are going to make bugs as duplicates of
each other, please ensure that the master bug is the one with the most
useful information in it (in this case, that is this bug as it already
has quite extensive debugging information in it)

Once that's had some review upstream it should also go to stable, and it
