I didn't saw the comment about removing the line with kopt_2_6; I just
did that, and now it's working fine.

All is updated and I do not have the kopt_2_6 in menu.lst. As for the -w
thing it is a bug in initramfs-tools in file all_generic_ide. I'll file
the bug separately.

Make sure you have also upgraded module-init-tools and initramfs-tools.
If this is a fresh edgy install, upgraded to feisty, then there's a
chance you've been bitten by another bug:
edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, find the line with kopt_2_6 in it, and delete
that entire line. Then run "sudo update-ini
One further comment. In the case of vmware ading mpt drivers to the /etc
/initramfs-tools/modules file and regenerating initramfs fixed the
problem. But I think that they should be autodetected as it was before.
I thing it is connected with this grep -w thing.
