I have a similar problem on VMWare configured with simulated SCSI drive as root filesystem. The system does not boot on 2.6.19 and after waiting for a prompt I can confirm that there is no /dev/disk/by-uuid directory at all. The SCSI driver is not loaded and there is a message above (few screans) from grep in busybox that the -w switch is not supported. The SCSI driver is not loaded. I guess this may be connected with this -w switch thing. I'll be happy to provide any furher info. The system works on 2.6.17.
