I have the same problem. It occurred (first) when I tried to intall
WArcraft using wine. It occurred later when I tried playing a game from
the repositories (enemy lines7). I got a temporary fix by pressing
ctrl+alt+backspace.

Sorry, not possible to comment on that due to living physically
separated from my linux workstation by distance of one major ocean and
half a continent. It is likely to be that way for at least another
month.

I'm experiencing the same problem.
Strangely, not the whole primary screen is affected. Only certain kinds of
outputs.
Example for reproduction:
Fresh install of Kubuntu Edgy Eft 64bit
- linux-restricted-modules: 2.6.17.7-10.1
- nvidia-glx 1.0.8776+2.6.17.7-11.2
- xserver-xorg 1:7.1.1ubuntu6.2

Interestingly in the first boot the Nvidia seems to initialised twice.

I didn't had this problem immediately, but after some tweaking to get

I tried different Nvidia drivers and configuration settings to get rid
of it, but nothing helped. I shutdown my system several times, but

I have the same problem with Ubuntu Edgy running on my nVidia GeForce

The "color banding" seems only to appear on vertical gradients.
Horizontal gradients are displayed ok.

I have the same problem in a clean installation of Kubuntu Edgy (although my
home directory already had stuff in it).
In particular, I can also get around the problem by restarting the X server
using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
My graphics card claims to be a 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller:

What I think might be the problem.
It appears that I don't get a full colour depth resolution at my left screen. I
don't know why, but I guess xorg.conf can at least be used to solve the
problem. It appears that something that went right by default earlier, now goes
