@aquaristdylan007,
It is possible using hda-verb, but without knowing which inputs you're talking
about, I can't give any better instructions.

Hello! Problem exists for me too! darn! HDA_Analyzer can fix it b muting
some inputs that are not being used. But I must mute them manually upon
each boot! Is there a way to save the settings, and have them auto apply
on boot?

As for taking speakers as input - that functionality is disabled since
the speaker node is set as "OUT" instead of "IN". It is not uncommon for
physical pins on the chip to have both input and output functionality.
BIOS sets that correctly (well, in most cases) at boot to make it fit

@henritonchain, great that you found a solution. Can you please do the
following:
1) I'm assuming you still have
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules installed
2) Shut down and start up your computer, so the noise comes up.
3) Take an alsa-info https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Au

Thank you so much for directing me to hda_analyzer.
I was finally able to reduce the noise drastically.
To do this, i tweaked the settings of one of the mixers.
Strangely, there were 4 inputs labelled Val[0], Val[1], Val[2] and Val[3].
The first two had sliders in the output section (controlling le
I'm not sure I can't help you further, but if you're interested in
experimenting yourself, you could try twiddling some buttons in hda-
analyzer (which can be downloaded from my ppa, see the snd-hda-tools)
and see if anything helps against the distortion/noise.

alsamixer controls don't really affect the noise. Sometimes the static
is worse in the right or left speaker, and then i just shift balance to
the other side. Also the signal-to-noise ratio is a little better when i
set PCM and master to 100% while setting Front to as low as possible,
but that's it
So what alsamixer controls affect the noise, and in what way?

The noise is in every channel as far as I can tell. I can't test the headphone
jack right now as the motherboard connector is unplugged.
Also, the noise isn't exactly the same on every channel, I get different shades
of crackling/distortion/static...

Thanks for addressing this issue so quickly!
Yes, I have tried the latest alsa, and i think also model=generic (not quite
sure, i'll check again)
Playing around in alsamixer can somewhat improve the noise.
I figured I get "best" results by setting "Master" and "PCM" to 100% and
"Front" to as low
Assuming you have tried the above - and also tried model=generic, which
gives you crippled functionality, so that would be just for testing - is
there anything you can mute in alsamixer to make the noise go away?

hi henritonchain,
Have you also tried the latest alsa kernel drivers? See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules
Also, is this noise in both line-out and headphones?

** Description changed:
Since I installed ubuntu (10.04 then 10.10) on my new machine (asus

constant static/crackling distortion on every 7.1 channel.
The sound card I'm using is the onboard Realtek audio, which ha
