/etc/iftab contained a bogus mac address for eth0. Presumably, the
systems leaves eth0 unassigned in that case. I entered the interfaces
correctly, and everything seems to be back in order. For my purposes
this issue is resolved, but perhaps the upgrade process should check
that iftab entries ar

I've been in touch with somebody with the same mainboard, he's using
Debian and while the interfaces have been switched around occasionally,
they've both been working, for kernels 2.6.1[678]. Any ubuntu-specific
patches in there?
