Charlie, did you see my posts #2 and #3? I ask you to confirm because my
system is up to date* and the problem keeps occurring when icons
disappear and appear.

Thank you for reporting this issue. I am keeping this open because I
also observed the notification area icons shrink and grow. However, the
latest updates seem to have resolved that issue. Now the icons appear to
be about 1/2 the size of the mixer icon. At least the size seems to stay
the same now
New evidence. nm-applet crashed (or disappeared for some other
reason...). It's the icon with the red dot in the newest screenshot.
When I restarted nm-applet from the terminal, the icons shrank. They
/don't/ grow bigger again when killing nm-applet.

Great. As soon as I decide to write a bug report, the size is back to
normal after rebooting :-)
Well let's hope this was just a temporary problem that does not start
again. I'll keep observing things and come back in a few days...
