As of November 6, the fix for this is to use the PPA "ricotz" version of gnome-shell and all of its dependencies in Ubuntu Natty. On Oct 27, I was able to install gnome-shell 2.91.0+git20101022 .6b47b78d-0ubuntu1~11.04~ricotz0.3_i386.deb . This version and every version since have worked fine, tho
