I have the same exact problem with my Lenovo G560
initially installed UBUNTU 10.04 with alsa 1.0.21
and due to some problems like headphones are not muting the sound from the
speakers i upgraded to alsa 1.0.24
after that i had the same problem:
((before upgrade))
mute hotkey is dark ==> the soun
I want to get this bug report back to its topic please. I can reproduce
the OPs issue on my ideapad z460.
I herewith try to make the issue clearer:
1) Physics and look: The mentioned mute key physically is no real key,
it's a touch sensitive spot above the keyboard, but it reports a normal
keypre
The headphone jack is also non functional, sound will always be from
internal speakers.

In my case helps the workaround by adding command listed bellow in the
startup scripts just after pulse audio boot:
amixer -c 0 -- sset Side playback 100% unmute
The command unmute the Side channel

The issue also occurs on the Desktop PC on the Kubuntu 10.10. It isn't
the ALSO or pulse audio bug? I noticed that the after reboot, "Side
channel" is muted, after i click unmute on kmix "Side channel" set to
100% volume

Such keys are not an audio driver problem. They are managed further up
in the desktop environment, reassigning.
