The problems I described were rectified by setting i915.modeset=1 as
stated by James Keating in the below site

Through everything boots fine now and i get a desktop, the screen
brightening widget does not work.

"Same-here's" are rarely helpful - but I just rebuilt my system with a
Gigabyte H55M-UD2H and i3 560 - and have exactly the same problem. The
OS worked with the old system (Nvidia-based card) but X will not start,
with these same errors, on the new system.

My ubuntu 10.10 (completely new install) starts X automatically using
fbdev instead of intel driver, so I can not open desktop effects. The
log file says:

I have the same problem. I have upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 and after
reboot the X did not start. It is possible to run GUI only in the
Recovery mode.
