Hello! The problems I described were rectified by setting i915.modeset=1 as stated by James Keating in the below site
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1594122 Through everything boots fine now and i get a desktop, the screen brightening widget does not work. Gavin - have you had any luck ?
