FWIW, the crash seems rather arbitrary and might just have been a
temporary flux from an update for example.

I can NOT reproduce this incident, NOR have I seen any crashes of this
(previously frequent) bug anymore recently.
I am noticing very rare (2 per 4 months) FATAL - IO errors
from kscreenlocker in xsession-errors* but they seem to be generated outside
the kscreenlocker (in xserver/ nvid
Is this issue still reproducible?
