Re that post, above: I should add that when I said it's been happening
"for the last month or so", the behaviour started when I set up a new PC
to replace an older one that had died. So, it's been happening ever
since I commissioned this new low-end HP machine.

I'm having a similar problem.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with kernel 2.6.38-14-generic-pae.
I use growisofs nightly for incremental backups, and call eject for the device
upon successful completion.
For the last month or so, the eject I call from the nightly backup script (from
root) seemed to

I experienced the same problem under 10.04, 10.10, and 11.04 (current
system). I found a reference to a Plextor firmware update, installed it
and now problem is solved! Suggest you and others investigate how to do
this update. It will fix several brands but not all. I did it quickly,

I ha a thought, and ran the udevadm monitor -e --udev command and then
ejected a disk in Nautilus instead of using the button on the drive
(which got no return as you can see in the previous post).

monitor will print the received events for:

The tray on my sata dvd writer closes immediately after opening allowing
no time to insert or remove disks, my IDE CD-rw works fine. I have had
this problem since 8.04. I have followed several bug reports on this and
they keep closing without solving my problem .
