Yes, this is not a bug, it's less then optimal behaviour, but there
really isn't much you can do about it.

Since 0.8.5, the default encoding for the subtitle files is UTF-8. if
your .srt file is not in utf8 you need to dpecify the encoding either in
the preferences or in the open dialog.
