Title:
thttpd will not start

Is there a reason why thttpd is not enabled by default just like any
other server than you can install in Ubuntu? This is completely
confusing for first time users. The already mentioned non-verbosity of
this behaviour makes this problem even worse.
Setting this bug to "confirmed" since it really
ENABLED=yes worked for me as well.
But it's a shame that /usr/sbin/thttpd returns error code 0 without
starting.
It should at least say: "sorry, ENABLED was set to NO, edit
/etc/default/httpd".

Solved:
by default /etc/default/thttpd has ENABLED=No. Put ENABLED=yes and then
you could to /etc/init.d/thttpd {start, stop, ...}
Xan.

When I run
/etc/init.d/thttpd
nothing happens
But when I run "thttpd" as a run, server runs.
Why?
