Problem solved for me.
This slowness was caused by a faulty libcairo2 package in a repo I added to my
software sources list (the gimp-dev one).
I switched back to ubuntu's default package and everything's fine now.

Little update :
I deactivated the proprietary drivers in order to run nouveau for a while. The
result in general is *slightly* better, especially with nautilus.
So this points towards a bug with to the proprietary nvidia drivers.
I think it's worth opening a new bug report

I'm also affected by this bug.
Though as mentioned in Pedro Villavicencio 's post, it also seems to me like a
video issue.
Nautilus slowness is the most noticeable aspect of this bug, but it also
affects others applications when displaying menus, resizing windows or opening
files. Nothing is re
I am having this issue, and it seems to happen more after fresh boot
than after running the distro for a while.
