@Alberto, Matthew: I don't think it's a problem with the kernel module.
Matthew's lsmod command actually shows that the kernel module is loaded.
The error messages are from the Xorg log. It's the user-space
fglrx_drv.so that can't be found. Maybe Xorg isn't looking in the right
place for some reaso
@Matthew
You're definitely experiencing a different problem. The fglrx package failed to
build the kernel module. Maybe you're missing the headers for your kernel? Hard
to tell without seeing the output of "sudo apt-get install --reinstall fglrx"

Lucid Lynx 64 bit nightly build hangs on boot
I just started getting this after updating this morning:
# Xorg.0.log output

(WW) Warning, couldn't open module fglrx

related to my comments in #30 / #31, I'm attaching the Xorg.0.log from
the system at the freeze point.

I'm still seeing the same effect on Acer E360, 32bit Lucid, with the
2:8.723.1-0ubuntu1 driver. I've not had time to look deeper yet, I
needed the PC for more urgent things so have reverted to the OSS driver
for now.

Should mention - thanks very much for getting this one in - it was
severely crippling to me, and it would be sad to ship a LTS that didn't
work with ATI's flagship GPU.

@Proxess: This shouldn't be necessary. The fglrx installation disables

Hallelujah! After six weeks of pain, the latest fglrx update tonight
seems to have fixed the problem! For the first time I am finally able
to use my monitor at its proper resolution with accelerated graphics!
I was really getting worried this would never be fixed before Lucid
final release.

Can you try the latest version of fglrx (2:8.723.1-0ubuntu1) and see if
it solves the problem, please?

Ok, some very limited progress:
The latest updates at least now let me get to the rescue prompt and
start a safe mode X without having to uninstall fglrx. But fglrx is
obviously not working properly. This is after I blew everything away
and started fresh from a Beta 2 CD, so the there truly is a

Thanks for your observation - that's interesting, I'm surprised i failed
