Thanks for your observation - that's interesting, I'm surprised i failed to notice that - any clue as to why it failed to load? It was installed in the manner described in comment 12, with no problems reported.
I am sure I also tried a sudo apt-get install fglrx from the bash prompt as well. Is there some missing dependency?
