Same here. Also an EEE PC 1005 PE user.
This is a very serious bug. One note of potential use to developers is
that brightness is behaving like a sine function. As you decrease and
increase brightness, brightness oscillates in a wave fashion.
Also, brightness worked perfectly in Ubuntu 9.10. I am
Workaround: changing GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub by
adding 'acpi_osi="Linux" acpi_backlight=vendor'

A quick update... I think this is more serious than I thought. Even with bright
at maximum it is so dark that I can't use the computer within sun light.
