The capability mismatch happens when you are running the older client 1.0.2 on
Karmic. An update of the client to 1.0.3 , running System > Administration >
Update Manager corrects this.
Looks as though that is irrelevant since you upgraded. Either way glad
it is fixed.

I forgot to say that I did have this 'capabilities mismatch' error when
I first installed with the stock ubuntuone-client, which was what lead
me to try and install a newer version. I'll mark this as new again

You are right, I did try and install a newer version of the client. Sorry I
thought removing the package and the repo would get rid of all the files - or I
would have mention
