It was fixed in Debian xscreensaver 5.10-4 in 2009, so from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xscreensaver/+publishinghistory
that would be in Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, 11.10 and 12.04.

Also note: this is not WISHLIST importance. It is CRITICAL.
If I had not been the first one to spot this behavior on my system, I
could have faced disciplinary action and possibly lost my job. At a
minimum, IT's response would have been immediately to lock-down all
"non-standard" installs which
John's proposal in comment #2 is also acceptable. i.e. It shouldn't be
part of "random". [at least without some kind of EXPLICIT CONTENT

Specifically, short of uninstalling the entire extras collection, you
run the risk of this screensaver being reinstalled again as part of
normal ubuntu updates, so don't think that removing it this way is a
real solution.

Once you have been stung, Dusty's approach works to remove it:
$ cd /usr/lib/xscreensaver
$ sudo su
# mkdir disabled
# mv webcollage disabled/
# mv webcollage-helper disabled/
# exit
This should be considered a workaround and not a fix! The issue still
remains.

This is absolutely unacceptable. This just stung me at work.
There is a reasonable expectation when installing a software collection
from a trusted source that it will not secretly contain a porn-fest.
Telling users to simply uninstall the offending screensaver does nothing

Sorry to keep this post alive but why not just remove the screensaver

FYI, the Debian version (which probably ends up in Ubuntu 10.10) has

Why is everyone just taking the easy way out and saying that "if you

you can have webcollage to take content only from a local folder by

Agreed as well. THis should be taken out of the extra's package. While I
do love the screensaver, as it gives a great view of "the web", it is
inappropriate. I want to keep random, but do not want this one.
That being said locating webcollage gives:
/usr/lib/xscreensaver/webcollage
/usr/lib/xscree
This needs to be fixed. As originally requested "webcollage should be packaged
separately" an an adults only screensaver. I have a 10 year old grandson who
likes screensavers. He installed the extra screensaver package because that is
where most of the screensavers are, with obvious undesired

My concern is that the webcollage screensaver, retrieves sexually explicit
images without "user consent", or even a warning.
IIRC, if you select "random", you'll get the images. If you select it and
hit preview, you get the images.
In both cases, under 18s get exposed to "inappropriate" content, l
its not in xscreensavers package it is in xscreensaver-extra package. If you
dont want to use the screensaver than dont use it, but since there are hundreds
of screensavers in Ubuntu why would you use one that has sexually explict
images if it bothers you. That is not really a cause to remove it
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Marked as wishlist. I dont see why it should be removed when there are
choices of 30 other screensavers to choose from. But i do agree that is
shouldnt be inculded in random.

Exclude webcollage from the xscreensaver pac
I agree that there should be a way to disable webcollage. Especially
since with gnome-screensaver set to 'random' there doesn't seem to be
any way of specifying a limited selection of screensavers for it to
choose between. I was unaware of its existence until it came up
randomly, and if it had been
