I'm currently using feisty and no longer using edgy, so I couldn't tell
you if it is a problem in edgy or not, however I haven't had any
problems in feisty, yet I'm not using XFCE much anymore either. Sorry I
couldn't be of more help.

I wonder if a conflict between the edgy packages and your compiled version of
Xfce could be the problem. Could you try an update from a clean install?

The following is the results I get after running xfce4-mixer from a
terminal. I did install xfce4.4b2 from source back in dapper before i
upgraded to edgy.. Everything worked fine then. However, after edgy was
