The following is the results I get after running xfce4-mixer from a
terminal. I did install xfce4.4b2 from source back in dapper before i
upgraded to edgy.. Everything worked fine then. However, after edgy was
installed this along with other applets failed to work. I thought that
some of the applets might have gotten replaced by the ubuntu debs for
xfce4, so I recompiled xfce4.4b2 and restarted the volume mixer. Now
the mixer seems to work partially, but when you open the preferences it
takes you to the dialog that lets you pick a mixing device and lets you
select which channels you want to be able to control, when i check the
boxes I want to control and apply, they still don't appear in the main
mixer window. If it is necessary I can take a screenshot of this and
attach it. Here is the verbose output for xfce4-mixer:

$ xfce4-mixer
