Just to add confusion, there aren't always fixed limits per protocol.
Statusnet for example can be configured with different limits per
installation. That isn't important for identi.ca users, but private
instances might well have been customised.

Although Gwibber counts down the 140 characters if I post something on
facebook, it still sends the messages if they are longer than 140 (but
shorter than 420). So the function of posting longer messages on
facebook is not affected, it is just confusing that Gwibber shows that
the message is too lo

Perhaps you have not read the bug report fully.
Facebook does not impose a 140 character limit on status updates. But
Gwibber does not allow status updates if you only have Facebook
selected of more than 140 characters.
