Update:
1. solution proposed on forum:
edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg, change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet
splash nomodeset" <
does not help.
2. I found the conditions that lead to crash: any sort of download
a) any download on konqueror (browser that came with kubuntu)
