I'm also experiencing this error at boot time. I have plymouth installed
(0.8.0~-7) and ubuntu-standard 1.183.

Actually, I guess that implies you previously had plymouth installed,
and then removed it, in which case you'd be looking at the old version
of the plymouth.conf file from plymouth 0.8.0~-2 or earlier?
As of version 1.183, ubuntu
The /etc/init/plymouth.conf script doesn't start plymouth at boot time
at all; plymouth is (at this point) supposed to be started from the
initramfs. Do you have an initramfs? Are you booting with the
(default) 'splash' option enabled?
