I personally do not have compiz enabled at all, so that's not the
solution to my problem.

The problematic package is the visual effects (compiz). Disable it at
System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual effects, select "None". It
should be ok now. :)

I found another inconsistency:
when pressing 'F11' the windowtitlebar disappears and the page goes to
fullscreen (so it covers the whole screen) but the menubar, the
locationbar, the bookmarkbar and the tabbar all stay on the screen.
When using the menu option view->fullscreen (so using the mouse
OK, I assign it to ubuntu-desktop (I don't know really the source of the
problem).

I guess this is nbot a firefox bug. Karmic has problems with fullscreen
on my Dell Inspiron too. Fullscreen games, fullsecreen videos,
fullscreen picasa slideshow... Top panel is visible in fullscreen until
additional mouseclick.
