Actually I take that back it did not work. After I posted i tried
shutting down my computer and again I got the same error while
deactivating swap :(

Possible fix or workaround - read the entire thread at

discussed, some of which worked on some computers. I haven't tried it
yet (I will after exams), but if anyone does, let us know.

Same here on a Dell XPS m1330 with Wubi on Vista. Apparently there is no
activity but the systems does not halt.
When booting in recovery mode I can shutdown by typing: sudo shutdown -h
now. However, without the -h option, the system fails to stop.
This is a really annoying bug! I hope somebody f

I hope some one from Ubuntu would look at it.. when i looked around i found
that people had similar issues upgrading from older version prior to 9.10.

I have the same problem. It seems to be kind of random. Sometimes it
shuts down normally but most of the time it requires a forced shut down.

Same here after upgrade to 9.10 from 9.04 on FSC Amilo Si 1520 (Wubi on
Vista). Fortunately the system can be powered off (well, at least forced
to do so). But the software rebooting doesn't work for me, I/O errors
after the swap part...
