Same problem with Edgy Eft.
The "disable screensaver" option in mplayer gui / misc menu doesn't work.
Aftr wandering around the Net, it seems that mplayer disables xscreensaver but
doesn't know about gnome-screensaver AND gnome-power-manager.

I managed to "solve" it somehow.
As I found out later, it was necessary to change System -> Preferences
-> Power Managment -> Put display to sleep... (and move the slider to
the "never" position).
It'd be good to have it in one place someday.

I'd rather say mplayer fails to disable DPMS feature, which suspends
monitor after 30 minutes (in your case). I have similar problem, Ubuntu
6.06.
