I managed to "solve" it somehow.

As I found out later, it was necessary to change System -> Preferences
-> Power Managment -> Put display to sleep... (and move the slider to
the "never" position).

It'd be good to have it in one place someday.

I've also disabled screensaver (I don't like screensavers, especially
cpu-hungry opengl-ones ;)) but i don't know if it's necessary.
