I have this problem as well. I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 Karmic. The
problem began after the upgrade.
Writer will also not save notes which are placed in a doc file. Only
.odt.

Hello.
I can confirm this problem in ubuntu 9.10 RC. This happens when I try to
save a .doc file from a .odt file, or when I save changes to a .doc
file.

I can't make this crash when saving to doc format when using jaunty with
the ppa OOo 3.1.1 debs, I need to test on karmic to see if it happens
for me on that.
