process in "ps aux|grep dbus". So it seems that upstart got confused
here?

Yeah, d-bus is pretty central. If it doesn't run, pretty much nothing
desktop-ish will work correctly nowadays.

okay sudo restart dbus
then sudo start gdm seems to of worked
