Same problem here in the definitive release BUT please note that is not
that the microphone doesn't work... simply the volume is too low! To
understand it I simply plugged in my mp3 player, that is amplifies, of
course, and the output level is much higher than a passive microphone...
What can I do

I am pleased to report that the external microphone works nicely when
tested by System Test (checkbox) on my Asus A2H (A2500H) on Ubuntu 9.10
(Official Release) when run in Live mode and when installed for testing
purposes on my Windows XP SP3 partition using Wubi.exe!

I discovered during the sound test two steps hence that the sound was
muted which might have affected the test. Thus to insure accuracy, the
speaker tests in the System test Utility should be moved to precede the
microphone tests, and should also test to see if the sound is muted or
sound volume is
