For me this is not with a laptop but does occur everytime I open firefox
perhaps out of a hibernation.
When it does it usually hangs firefox and most of the desktop.CPU load goes to
100% and sometimes call for a Killall firefox or systym monitor kill process.
Occasionally I see a Zombie firefox

The main difference is that I use the laptop for my X.org testing work.
So on the desktop most of the time when firefox ends it is because the
system was shut down deliberately, whereas on the laptop most of the
time firefox ends because of a system freeze, X.org crash, etc.
