This is no longer an issue for me in Ubuntu 11.04, my DVI monitor is now
recognized. As an added bonus, if I have the main screen set to the
external monitor and I unplug it from my laptop, the main screen shifts
back to my laptop without bothering with the control panel. And if I
plug it back in

I just tried another monitor (DVI) and it worked fine in all modes. So
the problem seems to be that certain monitors are not recognized as a
DVI device. The monitor which is not recognized is a Dell SE198WFP flat
panel LCD monitor.

I am having the exact same problem with a Dell Inspiron E1705. The
external DVI monitor will not work since upgrading to 9.10. My Dell has
the same Intel Graphics controller as the MacBook and xrandr reports
the DVI is disconnected when it is actually plugged in, just as reported
by the MacBook
I just tried the new 9.10 RC live, amd 64 live version in my macbook
black 2.1, and again, my cinema display attached to the dvi port is
going out of sync when disabling the internal display O_O .

While this is not a solution to the problem, I use the following
workaround for my day to day work (I use jaunty but with ppa xorg and
kernel from karmic):
xrandr --newmode 1680x1050 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089
-HSync +VSync
xrandr --addmode DVI1 1680x1050
xrandr --out
I have the same problem with ubuntu 9.10 (I've only tested alphas 5 and 6 (live
only)) with my macbook black 2.1.
Since I bought this laptop, about 3 years ago or so, I've been unable to use
linux with an external display :(, still waiting for a fix.

One data point: Could it be that the switch from grub to grub-pc changed
things? Previously when connecting a monitor via DVI before booting, I
would see the grub screen on the external monitor.
With grub-pc it seems, that while it will boot up after the timeout, the
menu is never shown, not on th

DVI output worked just fine in Jaunty on this MacBook4,1. It completely
stopped working in the current karmic alpha release. (no monitor is
