I have tried various things (as well as the above) and have found the
following error messages.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such file (errno3): unexpected signal 2.
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/'username'/Xauthority

Tried starting gdm via sudo /etc/init.d/start gdm - failed. The original error
about the usb cable has gone, but there is a line before the grub screen

of device [0xe 00-0x]
Output of cdetail /var/log/Xor

is my HP deskjet f4185 - it still works fine in jaunty.
Computer is gigabyte Ma770-D3 (I think that's the model #), nvidia
8600gt GPU, AMD 4800+ CPU, 2gb 800MHz ram
