Tried starting gdm via sudo /etc/init.d/start gdm - failed. The original error about the usb cable has gone, but there is a line before the grub screen appears that says [0.180709] pci 0000:00:00:0 BAR 3: address space collision on of device [0xe 000000-0xffffffff] Output of cdetail /var/log/Xorg.0.log says: "fatal server error: no screens found" Seems very likely that the error has been caused by an update to the nvidia drivers.
