This problem disappeared for me sometime over the summer, but it
resurfaced yesterday. It may have something to do with setting the gconf
value "/apps/gnome-power-manager/actions/event_when_closed_battery" to
"off", which I did to try to solve Bug 425411 (per this comment:

There is evidence in the latter two logs that the laptop was indeed
asleep: the absence of MARK messages. On May 1, there is no
activity—and no MARKs—from 20:30 to 23:57. On May 5, the
period is from 10:30 to 11:12.

This happened again the other night. At around 8:20 PM I closed the lid.
I observed the status lights and confirmed that the "throbber" was
indicating suspension. I then put the laptop in my bag and didn't take
it out again until the morning. At that time, the computer was powered
down; it had auto
I'm attaching the output to /var/log/messages covering a period
yesterday when I experienced this problem. I closed the lid at around
10:20 and opened it again around 11:55, to find the laptop was not
suspended.
Looking at the logs, it's possible the laptop never suspended (that in
