I have the same problem for a long time. Saw the problem first when
login on gdm. After entering the password the word 'error!' displays.
But able to login. It happends after a synaptic package manager upgrade.

Nothing was displayed on the terminal, the windows just popped up asking
for the authenticate password. Here is the log file:

Could you please try
polkit-auth --obtain org.freedesktop.systemtoolsbackends.set
and enter your password and report anything displayed on the terminal.
Then please look in /var

Also, you are entering the password of the user that is shown
in the combo box, not any root password or similar?
