Update: I downgraded to the version from Intrepid with no joy. Same
behaviour. Could this be a problem originating from HAL or suchlike,
i.e. not reporting the correct device status to the launcher app?

I can confirm exactly the same behaviour on the eeepc 1000. There are
various other reports of the same thing and I cannot find details of a
fix or workaround. This includes randomly working for some single
partition devices but only very rarely.
This worked perfectly in previous releases of net
