Right now, the icon is visible only when update -manager is manual

I'm running into this problem as well. I upgraded my install from
Intrepid and now I don't have no update-manager icon (in notification
tray), nor the icon for when a package manager is running.

Same, at least it could've bought up a quick notification to tell you
updates were available and disappeared again. Now it doesn't appear at
all!

If it was intentional, it's a pretty bad move, IMHO ;) I always liked
how update-manager wasn't intrusive when new updates were available,
that icon in the tray was just perfect, and it worked really well, too.

I'm not sure, but this might be the new behavior of Update Manager. I
noticed the change too, assumed it was intentional.
