I can confirm this on Dapper with xorg, xcompmgr and nvidia proprietary
driver.

BTW, this didn't seem to be the case when running xcompmgr on Xgl in
edgy with nvidia's proprietary drivers (haven't tried with Xorg on that
config yet).
My confirmation is on a Thinkpad T30 with a radeon mobility 7500 chip
using the Xorg radeon opensource driver.

Same thing happens with kwin (with the compositor enabled), and with a
metacity/kompmgr combo.

Simply workaround. This disables the fadein/out effects for the dialog. Source
and compiled packages (I've changed the package name to
gnome-session-nofadeinout, providing/conflicting/replacing gnome-session) can
be found at
